The Goal

Build and ship a real, multi-tenant rental management SaaS for the Kenyan market — one platform handling both short-term (Airbnb-style) and long-term residential rentals, with M-Pesa payments at the center rather than bolted on.

The Challenge

Most rental tools are built around a single market's assumptions — long leases, card payments, one currency. Kenyan landlords needed something that could handle nightly bookings and multi-year leases side by side, reconcile M-Pesa transactions automatically, and stay usable for a landlord managing a handful of units from their phone.

Technical Constraints

A React + TypeScript + Vite frontend backed by a Node/Express + Prisma API, with M-Pesa STK Push webhooks for payments, iCal sync for Airbnb/Booking.com calendars, and scheduled jobs for automated rent generation, late fees, and arrears tracking — deployed across Netlify, Railway, and Supabase.

Business Impact

PropiyoKE is deployed and has been tried by a handful of test users, with ongoing refinement ahead of a wider rollout.

Reflection

"Shipping your own product is a different discipline from shipping a client's — there's no handoff, so design decisions and their consequences land on the same desk. PropiyoKE is where multi-tenant data isolation and payment webhook correctness mattered more than any interface polish."
